Bulgaria, the oldest country in Europe, also known as the land of roses, is one of the worlds main producers of rose oil. Interestingly, most roses are not native to Europe, even though they have come to be featured prominently in European art and love customs. The Damascena Rose cultivated in Bulgaria’s rose valleys trace back its origins to Central Asia. It is sometimes credited that a French crusader brought the flower to Europe from a place called Damask in Syria, thus, the name.
